Epic Timepieces: A Journey Through Iconic Watches in Space Exploration

Humanity has always been captivated by the cosmos, and our fascination with space exploration is deeply ingrained in our collective consciousness. As technology advances, astronauts have embarked on ever more ambitious missions, journeying to the moon, the International Space Station, and beyond. Essential to these intrepid explorers have been their trusty companions—the timepieces designed to withstand the rigours of space and assist their wearers in navigating the perils of the final frontier. Iconic watches have carried an enduring legacy in space travel, enriching the mystique and allure surrounding them.

At CS Watches, we share this enduring fascination with space exploration, celebrating the triumphs of iconic watches that have played crucial roles in humankind's celestial endeavours. We understand that a stellar timepiece is not just a feat of engineering and precision but also represents a part of history and the indomitable human spirit. Our passion for exceptional watches shines through in our range of custom-built watches and Seiko modifications, inspired by the same dedication to quality and craftsmanship that has shaped the legendary timepieces that have ventured into space.

In this blog post, we will embark on an exhilarating journey through time and space, exploring the fascinating stories behind these remarkable watches—from Omega's legendary Speedmaster, the first watch on the moon, to Rolex's GMT-Master, a trusted timepiece for astronauts and aviators alike. We will detail the unique features and requirements that make these watches ideally suited to the demands of space travel and celebrate the groundbreaking achievements they have been a part of.

1. The Omega Speedmaster: The First Watch on the Moon

Without mentioning the legendary Omega Speedmaster, no discussion of iconic watches in space exploration would be complete. Launched in 1957, the Speedmaster was originally designed for use by motorsports enthusiasts and pilots. However, it wasn't long before its robustness and precision timekeeping caught NASA's attention. In 1962, astronaut Wally Schirra wore an Omega Speedmaster during the Mercury Sigma 7 mission, marking the start of the watch's association with space travel.

After rigorous tests, NASA approved the Speedmaster for space missions, and in 1969, history was made when Buzz Aldrin set foot on the moon wearing the Omega Speedmaster—hence, its nickname, the "Moonwatch." Since then, the Speedmaster has been a staple of numerous space missions, including the historic Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975 and missions to the International Space Station.

2. Rolex GMT-Master: Trusted Timekeeper for Aviators and Astronauts Alike

Originally designed for Pan American World Airways pilots in the 1950s, the Rolex GMT-Master enjoys a rich history closely tied to aviation and space. Recognised for its unique 24-hour hand, the GMT-Master allowed pilots and astronauts to keep track of multiple time zones—a vital function during transcontinental flights and space missions.

Arguably its most famous association with space travel began in 1962 when astronaut John Glenn wore a Rolex GMT-Master during the Mercury-Atlas 6 mission, becoming the first American to orbit the Earth. Since then, the GMT-Master has accompanied astronauts on numerous missions, making it another favourite in space exploration.

3. Bulova Accutron: The Watch that Guided the Apollo Missions

While the Omega Speedmaster and Rolex GMT-Master may dominate discussions around watches in space, the Bulova Accutron boasts an equally impressive legacy. Its groundbreaking tuning fork technology provided unparalleled accuracy, making it the perfect candidate for collaborating with NASA on various projects. The Accutron Astronaut, featuring a unique 24-hour bezel, was used by astronaut Dave Scott during the Apollo 15 mission in 1971.

The iconic tuning fork movement also served as the onboard timer on 46 missions of the Apollo program, and a Bulova Accutron clock is installed on the historic Voyager spacecraft, launched in 1977. Bulova's innovation and accuracy played a pivotal role in space exploration throughout the years.

4. Seiko: A Pioneer in Space Exploration with Quartz Technology

Seiko’s history of contributing to space exploration cannot be overlooked. When quartz technology emerged in the late 1960s, Seiko was at the forefront of developing new, highly accurate timekeeping solutions. The Seiko Quartz Astron debuted in 1969, transforming the world of watches with its unprecedented accuracy and efficiency.

Seiko stepped into space exploration in 1991 when the Seiko Quartz 7A28-7000—dubbed the "Spacewalk" watch—accompanied cosmonaut Sergei Avdeyev on a spacewalk during the Soyuz TM-12 mission. This event marked the first time a Seiko watch had been used in space. Seiko's Spring Drive technology, characterised by its smooth glide-motion hand and highly accurate movement, has proven to be another revolutionary milestone in space-ready watchmaking, with several models boasting the coveted "Spacewalk" designation.
